Each August, Black Business Month recognizes the entrepreneurs, innovators, and business owners whose ideas, resilience, and leadership help strengthen our economy. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the important role Black entrepreneurship plays in creating jobs, expanding opportunity, and building more resilient communities throughout Montgomery County, MD.
Why Black Entrepreneurship Matters
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Black entrepreneurs own more than 200,000 employer businesses that create jobs and 4.4 million nonemployer businesses across the United States. Together, these businesses contribute to economic growth, provide essential products and services, and create pathways to business ownership and wealth creation.
While entrepreneurship continues to grow, many Black business owners still face barriers to accessing capital, securing procurement opportunities, and obtaining the business development resources needed to scale their companies. Expanding access to these opportunities will enable more businesses to thrive, fueling innovation, creating jobs, and building a stronger, more resilient local economy.
How We Can Support Black-Owned Businesses
Supporting Black-owned businesses extends beyond a single month. Each of us can help strengthen Montgomery County’s entrepreneurial ecosystem by:
- Supporting local Black-owned businesses that provide quality products and services while contributing to the local economy.
- Including Black-owned businesses in supplier and procurement opportunities
- Mentoring and supporting emerging entrepreneurs.
- Connecting businesses with funding and business development resources.
- Promoting Black-owned businesses within our professional networks.
